My Riot

It’s the spring of 1990 and Val is outgrowing ballet, school, and her conservative upbringing—thank god for Riot Grrrl music.

My debut OGN is full of girl power, messy teens, and misbehavior, with a bespoke approach to art and color inspired by punk zines and gig flyers. Here is a fond review from How to Love Comics.

Following the previous page, Val's first encounter with "coat hangers" - girls who hold their boyfriends' jackets. Cut and paste techniques, like in panel 3, feel like zines but also help keep the illustration clear.

The cover! We went through several iterations and wanted something that was maybe cleaner and more "appealing" than the interior art to catch the eye.

Val and Kat play a birthday party. The girls playing shirtless was a lovely detail in the script and shows how intimate and safe they feel playing amongst other girls.

Concept art for Val circa...shoot, 2017? You can see how the art style evolved into something grittier.

Smooch. The color treatment for the lightning strike in panel 2 is meant to mimic the sudden intensity of color that happens with one in real life (rather than with light and shadow, which is more typical).
